No, Klaviyo is not worth it for a small store. Even most larger businesses do not need it. Shopify and Shopify Email have a lot of functionality. Rule of thumb: only install third-party apps when you 100 percent need them to run the business.
Shopify Email leaves a lot to be desired, but Klaviyo is the most expensive thing out there. If cost-conscious, check out Omnisend — until you are at $75M per year in revenue, it will be great and cost a lot less. Seguno is another option for Shopify-mail-plus crowd.
People who say Klaviyo is always best in any scenario have forgotten or never knew what it means to manage a small business. Maybe later you will need something more powerful than Shopify Email, but is it worth paying for Klaviyo from the beginning for months or years when the basics suffice?
Klaviyo hands down for Shopify stores if you want real results. Native Shopify Email is pretty basic and you hit limitations fast at scale. We run an agency and moved almost all e-commerce clients to Klaviyo — segmentation and automation flows pull in $40K+ monthly from abandoned cart sequences alone.
Shopify Email has maybe 30 percent of Klaviyo's functionality, not 90. If the store grows, email revenue will most likely be the biggest channel. Set up email marketing early — build foundations in one platform, then tweak and grow. Migrating later is painful.
Use Klaviyo across multiple B2C niches. Definitely not the cheapest option, but segmentation is amazing. Set up a Sunset Flow and you limit contact-list creep — surprising how many of 30K contacts do not actually spend regularly. Suppress those profiles and you slow how quickly you move up tiers.
Charging by active contacts can be expensive especially for stores that have many contacts but do not broadcast every X days. If email sends are infrequent, paying by send rather than contact count cuts costs in half without losing functionality. Switching pricing model alone saves real money.
