Founded 2003 in Chicago by Jason VandeBoom; approximately 1,000 employees as of 2022. G2 lists ActiveCampaign at 4.4 stars across 14,678 reviews — one of the largest review corpora in the category. Pricing as of 2026: Starter $15/month, Plus $49/month, Pro $79/month, Enterprise custom (starts around $145/month) — all priced per contact tier. The category's recurring Reddit complaint: list-growth pricing escalation that made many decade-long users migrate to MailerLite, SendPulse, or Brevo.

  • Active Intelligence AI surfaces goal-aware automation suggestions and predictive segments — practitioners report 60% setup-time reduction and ~15% conversion lift on early tests (per Reddit r/Emailmarketing)
  • All-in-one platform: email marketing, automation, segmentation, and contact CRM in one tool — removes the need for a separate sales tool at early stage

Common complaints

  • Pricing escalates aggressively as contact list grows — Reddit threads document users hitting $350/month on 14K-contact lists and migrating to MailerLite, SendPulse, or Brevo (per G2 + multiple r/Emailmarketing threads)
  • Steep learning curve plus interface clutter — non-technical users struggle with advanced automation; reporting dashboards are less intuitive than competitor norms (per G2 reviews)
  • List hygiene workflow is friction-laden — Archive-then-Delete two-step plus support-gated deletion limits create friction for legitimate list cleaning (per Reddit r/Emailmarketing)
  • Customer support is occasionally slow during peak seasons; one widely-shared incident: an 8-year customer's account was shut down without notification with delayed resolution (per G2 reviews + Reddit)

After 8 years of using ActiveCampaign as a primary revenue driver, my account was shut down without notification. Support response was slow citing holiday season, despite this being peak sales time. Eventually reinstated, but the outage caused substantial financial loss and forced a competitor migration.

Conditional content and advanced segmentation deliver unmatched email personalization flexibility — tailored messaging based on purchase history and engagement patterns works well. Higher-than-competitor pricing and slower site loading are real drawbacks, but targeting precision justifies the cost at our scale.

Five years of reliance on the platform — invaluable for nurturing prospects and automating client communications. Interface is user-friendly enough for set-and-forget sequences. Recent pricing increases impact small businesses operating on tight margins significantly.

User experience and automation features are excellent, with abundant integrations available. Customer support responds quickly but operates only in English. The platform's heavy AI focus does not support all languages, limiting utility for multilingual teams running global campaigns.

Platform excels at email automation and contact organization — enables professional-grade marketing for solo operators. Contact tier pricing scales aggressively, making it challenging for businesses just starting out. Customer support response was occasionally slow during peak seasons.

Four years deploying ActiveCampaign across client accounts. The automation builder stands out as exceptionally powerful — the visual workflow editor maps complex nurture sequences without developer involvement. Reporting feels less advanced than competing platforms; native WordPress and Meta integrations save hours.

Seamless CRM-email integration allows automations based on deal stage without platform switching. Solid API and webhook support enable engineering-free integrations. Interface clutter and inflexible reporting force API hacking for custom exports; contact-based pricing scaling creates pain as lists grow.

Enables granular audience building using tags, custom fields, and behavioral data — superior to most competing tools. Centralized customer journey visibility consolidating email engagement, form submissions, and site visits is invaluable for diagnosing conversion friction and optimizing pages.

Automation flexibility enables highly personalized email sequences based on user behavior — transforms leads into structured customer journeys. Tagging and segmentation provide complete audience control. Feature-rich interface initially overwhelming, but time savings and conversion improvements outweigh the learning investment.

Interface is clear and easy to use, and the automation system is one of the best available. CRM tag-based filtering and contact organization streamline management significantly. Criticisms: clunky email builder, confusing reporting system, and inadequate campaign duplication features when running parallel campaigns.

Decade on ActiveCampaign, AWeber before that. AC is honestly great, but with a 14K list that is now an occasional newsletter, $350 per month is hard to justify at current feature plus member level. Searching for alternatives that keep the automation depth without the bloat.

Active Intelligence is moving ActiveCampaign beyond basic autoresponders. The AI suggests automation workflows based on goals (purchases, bookings, engagement), recommends smarter segments based on behavior patterns, and surfaces reporting insights. Curious how others are using it in real campaigns.

Happy ActiveCampaign user for years until they doubled the price of my package overnight and broke a pricing agreement made when I first signed up. Love AC automations and use them heavily across multiple businesses, but the price action forced a search for replacements.

ActiveCampaign AI segmentation is a genuine game-changer. Goal-aware automations dropped my setup time by about 60 percent, and AI-suggested segments nailed high-value repeat buyers perfectly. Conversion lift was around 15 percent. No deliverability hits at 50K list scale. Cross-channel email plus SMS flows are smooth.

ActiveCampaign is powerful, but pricing jumps get steep as lists grow. If you want something similar without the bloat, ConvertKit and MailerLite are solid for newsletters and basic automations. For visual automation plus CRM in one tool, Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) or GetResponse are worth a look.

ActiveCampaign's built-in ESP is solid enough for 200 to 300 sends per inbox. Would not bother hooking Gmail or Outlook unless personal touch or IMAP sync is needed. For better control and deliverability, route through custom SMTP with Mailgun or SendLayer. Stick to warmed domains and proper authentication.

The list uploads are HORRENDOUS — there is no tag support during CSV import. However the CSV is structured at upload time is what you get afterward, and applying tags has to happen as a separate post-import step. Frustrating workflow for agencies handling multiple client lists.

Another ActiveCampaign issue: they used to cap how many contacts you could delete in a single period before requiring support approval. Now they have made it Archive-then-Delete (doubled the work) and still require support tickets to let you do hygiene on your own list. Ridiculous.

Jumped ship from ActiveCampaign for the price-keeps-climbing reason. Tested SendPulse and MailerLite side by side and did not feel like I lost anything important for basic automations plus list management. AC is nice, but not 350-dollars-a-month nice for a newsletter setup.

Managing three accounts with around 4 million active users each, Salesforce reached the best price below ActiveCampaign with comparable settings. The down side is upfront annual payment required by SF to maintain the offer, while AC allows up to quarterly billing.
